What is a Pelvis or Groin MRI Scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create high-quality, cross-sectional images inside your body. It is a powerful diagnostic tool that does not use potentially harmful radiation.

A pelvis MRI scan is a versatile diagnostic tool that can be tailored to focus on specific areas of concern. We offer different types of pelvic MRI scans:

  • Pelvis Musculoskeletal MRI: Focuses on the pelvic girdle, muscles, ligaments, and soft tissues.

  • Female Pelvis MRI (Gynaecological): Examines the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and rectum.

  • Prostate MRI: For men, this scan examines the prostate gland, bladder, and rectum.

  • Sacroiliac Joints Scan: Provides a detailed view of the joints at the base of the spine.

  • Groin Scan: Focuses on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the groin area.

What Symptoms Would Prompt a Pelvis or Groin MRI Scan?

You should consider a private pelvic MRI scan if you are experiencing persistent or unexplained symptoms such as:

  • Chronic pelvic or groin pain

  • Hip pain, stiffness, or a loss of mobility

  • Swelling or inflammation

  • A noticeable lump or mass

What Can a Pelvis MRI Scan Detect?

The detailed images from your scan will allow our consultant radiologists to detect any damage or abnormalities in the soft tissues and bones of your pelvis and groin. A pelvis MRI can help diagnose a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Fractures or bone bruises

  • Ligament and tendon tears

  • Muscle strains

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Bursitis or other inflammation

  • Infections

  • Tumours

  • Hernias

  • Gynaecological or prostate-related issues

The results of your scan will provide your physician with the crucial information needed to make an informed diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

How to Prepare for Your Scan

Our Patient Care Team will ensure you are fully prepared for your appointment. Please inform us about your medical history, especially if you have any implants or conditions that might affect the scan, such as pacemakers, artificial joints, or if you are pregnant or claustrophobic.

A pelvis MRI scan takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the type of scan. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to check in. You will be asked to remove any metal objects or jewellery and may be given a gown to wear.
