What is a Lower Leg MRI Scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create high-quality, cross-sectional images inside your body. It is a powerful diagnostic tool that does not use potentially harmful radiation.

A lower leg MRI scan provides a detailed view of the inner structures between your knee and ankle, including:

  • Bones: The tibia and fibula

  • Muscles: The gastrocnemius and soleus

  • Soft Tissues: Tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and nerves

What Can a Lower Leg MRI Scan Detect?

The detailed images from your scan will allow our consultant radiologists to detect any damage or abnormalities. A lower leg MRI can help diagnose a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Fractures

  • Muscle strains and tears

  • Tendonitis and other soft tissue-related sprains

  • Nerve compression

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Shin splints

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Compartment syndrome

With a detailed report on the cause of your lower leg pain, your physician will be able to plan and prescribe the most appropriate treatment to get you back to health.

Preparing for Your Scan

Our Patient Care Team will ensure you are fully prepared for your appointment. Please inform us about your medical history, especially if you have any implants or conditions that might affect the scan, such as pacemakers, artificial joints, or if you are pregnant or claustrophobic.

A lower leg MRI scan takes approximately 40 minutes. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to check in. You will be asked to remove any metal objects or jewellery and may be given a gown to wear.

Our Private Hand or Wrist MRI Scan Packages

We offer three flexible and affordable packages. All our prices include a full report from a consultant radiologist and access to all your scan images, which you will receive within three working days.
