An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a safe, non-invasive way to capture detailed images of the body’s internal structures using magnetic fields and radio waves — without the use of ionising radiation.
The procedure is painless. You’ll lie on a padded table that gently slides into the scanner — a large, open-ended cylinder. Most scans take 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas being imaged.
You’ll be asked to remain still during the scan. While you may feel mild vibrations and hear knocking or tapping noises, these are entirely normal. Many of our patients listen to calming music or bring in their own playlist for comfort.
MRI scans are ideal for investigating a wide range of clinical conditions, including:
Orthopaedic and musculoskeletal injuries
(joints, ligaments, cartilage, muscles and bones)
Brain and spinal cord conditions
Breast imaging, often in conjunction with mammography
Cardiac and vascular conditions, such as:
Blocked or inflamed blood vessels
Structural changes to the heart or aorta
Damage caused by heart attack
Functional assessment of heart chambers
Yes. MRI does not use radiation, making it particularly suitable for patients requiring regular monitoring — including children, or those who wish to avoid radiation exposure.
Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member to your appointment. However, they will not be allowed in the scan room during the procedure.
