What is an Abdomen MRI Scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed, cross-sectional images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-rays, it does not use harmful radiation. An abdominal MRI scan produces high-quality images of the key internal organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen.

What Symptoms Would Prompt an Abdomen MRI Scan?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms with no clear cause, an abdominal MRI may be recommended to investigate further:

  • Persistent abdominal pain

  • Sudden or unexplained weight loss

  • Prolonged constipation

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Unexplained fever

  • Loss of appetite

What Can an Abdomen MRI Scan Detect?

Our scans are designed to meticulously examine the internal structures and tissues of your abdomen. The detailed images can reveal potential issues in your:

  • Liver

  • Kidneys

  • Spleen

  • Pancreas

  • Adrenal Glands

  • Biliary Tract

  • Lymph Nodes

  • Parts of your bowel

Based on these images, our consultant radiologists can identify abnormalities, tissue damage, or conditions such as:

  • Tumours or lesions

  • Cirrhosis

  • Abnormalities in the bile ducts

  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)

  • Gallstones

A clear diagnosis from your scan report empowers your physician to prescribe the most effective treatment for you.

Preparing for Your Scan: What to Expect

Our Patient Care Team will guide you through the preparation process. Please inform them about your medical history, especially if you have any implants or conditions that might affect the scan, such as:

  • Pacemakers, ICDs, or cochlear implants

  • Artificial joints or heart valves

  • A known allergy to MRI contrast material

  • Pregnancy

  • Claustrophobia

Unless you are instructed otherwise, you can typically eat, drink, and take your medication as normal before your scan.

During the scan, you’ll be asked to remove all jewellery and metal objects. The scan itself takes around 40 minutes, and we ask that you arrive 15 minutes early for check-in.
