What is a Chest (Thorax) MRI Scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to capture detailed cross-sectional images inside your body. Unlike X-rays, MRI scans do not use potentially harmful radiation.

A chest MRI scan provides a clear view of the chest cavity, including the mediastinum, chest wall, pleura, and blood vessels. Please note: This scan does not examine the heart. For concerns related to heart health, please refer to our Cardiac MRI Scan page.

What Can a Chest MRI Scan Detect?

The detailed images from your private chest MRI scan allow our consultant radiologists to examine the soft tissues, organs, and structures within your chest. This includes:

  • The thymus gland

  • Oesophagus and trachea

  • Thoracic diaphragm

  • Chest wall (skin, fat, muscles, and bones)

  • Blood vessels and lymph nodes

By meticulously analysing these images, your radiologist can identify any damage, abnormalities, or growths. The scan can help diagnose a range of conditions, including:

  • Tumours (assessing their size and spread)

  • Organ diseases or injuries

  • Inflammatory conditions

With a detailed diagnostic report, your physician will have the crucial information required to determine the best course of action for your treatment.

How to Prepare for Your Scan

Our Patient Care Team will ensure you are ready for your appointment. Please inform us about your medical history, particularly if you have any implants or conditions that might affect the scan, such as:

  • Pacemakers or cochlear implants

  • Artificial joints or heart valves

  • Pregnancy

  • Claustrophobia

A chest MRI scan takes around 40 minutes, and we ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. You will be asked to remove any metal objects or jewellery and may be given a gown to wear.
